JAKARTA (JP): One day after the Jatiasih-Cikunir turnpike was opened, traffic along the road on the south-eastern outskirts of Jakarta was seriously disrupted as motorists grappled with the new ticketingsystem.
The new turnpike was not the only road affected, with traffic jams affecting tollroads around the city.
Tollroad operator PT Jasa Marga's corporate secretary Okke Marlina said arguments between motorists and gate keepers were the main cause of congestion.
"People are not used to the new tariff and system and they tend to argue at the toll gates," Okke said.
Many motorists were not prepared for the open ticketing system or the increased toll of Rp 6,000 (U.S. 63 cents).
The new ticketing system requires tollroad users to pay at the entrance gate while under the old system, motorists paid at the end of the toll road.
Congestion soon spread to other toll roads around the city.
On the Jagorawi tollroad, which links Jakarta to southern areas like Bogor and Ciawi, cars lined up for 15 kilometers, while on Cimanggis tollroad, connecting Depok to Jakarta, motorists sat in a 12-kilometer-long queue. (Adisti Sukma Sawitri)
