JAKARTA : The government said Monday it would not raise electricity rates between now and 2008.
State Minister for State Enterprises Sofyan A. Djalil said power rates would remain unchanged because the government had allocated a sufficient subsidy for state-owned electricity firm PLN.
This year's subsidy for PLN stood at Rp 37 trillion (US$4.1 billion), Sofyan said, adding that the subsidy would be increased next year.
"There will be no electricity rate hikes in the next two years," he was quoted by Elshinta radio station as saying.
