JAKARTA (Antara): Publicly listed nickel firm PT International Nickel Indonesia (Inco) announced Tuesday that it had received a permit from the Forestry Ministry to build a hydropower plant in a forest near its mining location in South Sulawesi.
The 90-megawatt hydropower plant, dubbed the Karebbe power plant, was first announced in October 2004 to help raise the firm's production capacity to 200 million pounds (90,700 tons) of nickel in matte from 156 million pounds.
But the construction of the power plant was suspended in January last year due to the absence of a permit from the government.
"We are very pleased to have received this permit, which is central to moving forward on the project. We appreciate the Forestry Ministry for their willingness to work together with Inco to find a solution which will support a significant capital investment in Indonesia and protect the country's forests", said Inco president director Arif Siregar.
Inco, one of the chief producers of nickel, has integrated mining and processing facilities in South Sulawesi.
