JAKARTA : UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern over the potential consequences of a powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra island, according to a UN press statement.
Metro TV reported a team from Banda Aceh comprising members of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs andother UN staff would depart for Bengkulu for an initial assessment in the next few hours.
Separately, the UN chief's spokesperson released a statement saying the Asia-Pacific UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team was also on alert to travel to Indonesia if necessary.
At least six people were killed in the earthquake which happened at 6:10 p.m on Wednesday evening.
