PASURUAN, East Java :It took only around 30 minutes for Anne Schiffer, a student studying product design at the Leeds Metropolitan University (LMU) in Great Britain, to complete making a bamboo bell.
"It's finished," said Schiffer. "The bell will make a sound when it is rotated by the wind."
She then hung the bell on a branch of a tree in front of SDN 3 Dayurejo state elementary school in Gamoh hamlet, Dayurejo village in Prigen district in Pasuruan regency, East Java.
Schiffer, a native of Germany, was one of 16 LMU students taking part in a two-week volunteer program in the district in August.
They were working together with Kaliandra Foundation, which is involved in education, environment and cultural programs in Prigen, some 80 km north of Malang city.
The bamboo bell made by Schiffer was made up part of many ornaments for the playground built for the school.
The volunteers also built a playground for Jatiarjo state Islamic elementary school. Both schools are located on the slope of Mount Arjuna.(Wahyoe Boediwardhana)
