White Stripes shelve US concerts

White Stripes shelve US concertsWednesday, 12 September 2007

Rock band The White Stripes have cancelled their entire US tour because drummer and vocalist Meg White is suffering from acute anxiety.

On their official website it was announced that White's illness would leave her unable to travel between the 18 concert venues.

The duo have apologised to fans, saying: "We hate to let people down and are very sorry."

Their latest album Icky Thump was a UK chart-topper earlier this year.

Rise to prominence

Fans who already hold tickets have been advised to obtain refunds.

The tour was due to kick off in Albuquerque on Thursday, rounding off in Honolulu, Hawaii on 10 October.

In 2006, the band was forced to shelve four concerts in Japan after frontman Jack White suffered vocal chord problems and was ordered not to speak or sing for two weeks.

The group, from Detroit, Michigan, first achieved commercial success with their fourth album, Elephant, in 2003.

It topped the UK chart and spawned their breakthrough hit Seven Nation Army.

The duo have yet to score a number one album in the US.
