PADANG (Antara): A 25-year old man of Myanmar, Lay Psyu, was questioned by local Police in Solok, West Sumatra, on Saturday for failing to show immigration documents.
"A provisional examination shows that the man does not hold any passport and visa as well as temporary stay permit certificate," Solok Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Puji Sarwono said Sunday.
Psyu was arrested after shopping in Solok Market with his Indonesian wife on Saturday afternoon, he said.
He added Psyu and his Indonesian wife have long been living in Jakarta and he was in Solok for only two weeks before the arrest.
He said the foreigner would be questioned under the law prevailing in Indonesia. "But, we have yet to consider his deportation," he added.
"The two have violated Articles 53 and 54 of Law No.9/1992 on Immigration and are facing a seven-year imprisonment," he added.
Last Saturday, Padang City immigration office deported two Chinese people for violating tourist visa and stay permit.
"They were here to promote and sell some Chinese products, including cosmetics," he added.
He said the police had asked the Immigration Office to take tight control on foreigners visiting West Sumatra as there was an indication they visited the province for businesses.
West Sumatra is one of the tourist destinations in Indonesia. Mentawai Islands subdistrict in the province is famous for its surfing site. (**)
