JAKARTA : Vice President and Golkar chairman Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday congratulated Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri on her 2009 presidential bid.
"Congratulations to Ibu Megawati for accepting the request of her party members to contest the 2009 presidential election," he said.
PDI-P and Golkar formed a nationalist coalition earlier this year, causing speculation the two parties would unite behind a pair of presidential and vice presidential candidates in 2009.
However, Kalla denied that Golkar had proposed senior party member Surya Paloh as Megawati's running mate for the 2009 presidential race.
Surya Paloh was present at the closing ceremony of a PDI-P working meeting on Monday, when Megawati announced her presidential bid.
"We did not propose anything to PDI-P," Kalla said.
Observers say there is a good chance Kalla will launch his own presidential bid in 2009.
