Malaysia's Mahathir regains consciousness after heart bypass

9/5/2007

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad regained consciousness Wednesday after undergoing heart bypass surgery less than 24 hours earlier, his family said.

"All the signs are good," Mahathir's son, Mirzan, told The Associated Press.

Mahathir, 82, remained in the National Heart Institute's intensive care unit after being sedated overnight, but he could be moved to a regular ward within two or three days if his condition continues to improve, Mirzan said.

Earlier Wednesday, the institute said in a statement that doctors were "happy with his rate of progress."

Mahathir elected to have the surgery - his second since 1989 - after he suffered heart attacks in November 2006 and May this year.

The November heart attack forced him to greatly reduce his physical activities, and virtually halted his one-man campaign against his hand-picked successor, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Mahathir led Malaysia for 22 years until 2003, and stepped down after choosing Abdullah to replace him. But last year Mahathir began criticizing Abdullah, accusing him of corruption, nepotism and mismanaging the economy. Abdullah has rejected the allegations.
