JAKARTA : A magnitude-7.9 earthquake jolted Sumatra province of Bengkulu Wednesday evening at 6:10 p.m., and authorities issued a tsunami warning.
The earthquake, which was centered 159 kilometers northwest of Bengkulu at a depth of only 10 kilometers, was also felt in nearby provinces such as Lampung, West Sumatra, and Jakarta.
Several people working at skyscrapers in Jakarta said they felt the tremor which lasted for around five minutes, Elshinta radio reported.
The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunamiwarning. An official at the agency urged residents in Bengkulu, Lampung as well as Mentawai isles to move to safer places.
